In support of families struggling over these past few years with COVID, Heywood Rural Health (HRH) had made a contribution to Lions Club Heywood’s project ‘One Can Make A Difference’.
In their third year of supporting the project, from the middle of May to the end of June, HRH had run a winter food campaign ‘Friends Are For’ to collect non-perishable food and cash donations.
Stations were set up around the hospital building for staff members to make a contribution, while cash donations could be handed over directly.
Cash donations went to buying $40 IGA vouchers so families could purchase their own fresh fruit, vegetables or meat.
HRH recently handed over their large collection of non-perishables and $160 worth of IGA vouchers to the Lions Club Heywood.
The Lions Club keep a donation bin sitting outside of Daly’s IGA Heywood for locals to contribute to, often that’s purchasing and donating something extra after each regularly grocery shopping at the supermarket.
Lions member and Heywood Anglican Church reverend Judy MacPherson was the coordinator for this project that has been running since the beginning of the COVID Pandemic.
Lions Club Heywood immediate past President Graeme Bond said Reverend Judy’s church had been the storage point for all donations, which will be made into many hampers.
He said they were delighted by the large and generous donations with these hampers being delivered to families in need.
While funding from the government was unavailable over the COVID period, one of the project’s biggest food donators over the three years has been Warrnambool Food Share, a not-for-profit entity.
Mr Bond was very thankful to the HRH staff and local donations to what he believed was their most heart-warming project over the year.
